Thanks also to Jim Hammond for recommending The Monument and, yes, the Prince Tudor Theory that Queen Elizabeth and Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford produced an unacknowledged heir to the throne -- raised as Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, for whom Oxford adopted the pen name "Shakespeare" in order to publicly support his son during the escalating power struggle over royal succession. (Southampton is the only individual to whom "Shakespeare" dedicated any of his works.)
