I took a peek and in the responses, saw a modern author that I have enjoyed--Alan Furst.<br />He has written about 10 novels set in the late 1930s in Europe. The reader knows what will happen on Sept 1, 1939, but the characters don&#39;t know for certain. The future hangs over the novels like a cloud. He did his research and his style appealed to me. The books don&#39;t need to be read in particular order; a main character in one is on the periphery in another. The Foreign Correspondent is a good start. His books, to me, are film noir on paper. As good as O&#39;Brian? I have not read Jane Austen, but am tempted. My wife has read P&amp;P 22 times. O&#39;Brian is said to have idolized Austen and kept original editions of her work at his writing table. I have been smitten with the era of Aubrey and Maturin. I dove into all of Hornblower; plowed through Moby Dick. S. Thomas Russell&#39;s Under Enemy Colors was not a bad read for a first time first novel.<br />David Cordingly&#39;s biography on Cochrane is a worthy read as well as his The Billy Ruffian, the story of the HMS Bellepheron. Ian Toll&#39;s Six Frigates, the history of the American Navy is fascinating as well. Philbrick&#39;s In the Heart of the Sea, the story of the whaleship Essex&#39;s sinking by Sperm Whale in the middle of the Pacific and subsequent ghastly events kept me turning the pages.<br />I, too, read O&#39;Brian in chain fashion--all of them in under 5 months.<br /><br />Which ain&#39;t I ready to do again, ain&#39;t I?
